The film 'The Meeting' (2018) gives an insight in the power of a progressive form of justice: ‘restorative justice’. The script is based on a true story of an encounter which took place in Dublin in the form of a restorative justice meeting between Ailbhe Griffith and the man who, nine years earlier, subjected her to a horrific sexual assault and left her seriously injured and fearing for her life.

In the film, Ailbhe chose to play herself. Following her own experience, she has become an advocate for the application of restorative justice in cases of serious crime, including sexual violence. The film is directed by Alan Gilsenan who is an award-winning Irish writer, film-maker and theatre director.

Dr. Anna Matczak, THUAS lecturer in Comparative Criminology and Researcher at Centre of Expertise Global Governance and Chair of the Research Committee of the European Forum for Restorative Justice, will give a brief introduction to the movie.

After the film dr. Annemieke Wolthuis, researcher, trainer and mediator in the field of human rights, children’s rights and restorative justice, will discuss some of the key themes from the film as well as the availability of restorative justice services in the Netherlands. Annemieke holds a PhD in restorative justice and children’s rights and was a Board Member of the European Forum for Restorative Justice.
