Freedom Lecture: Israel and Palestina The Hague

  • Date: 19 February
  • label.tijd 19:30 - 21:00
  • Location: Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel

Living together in freedom between two nations on one piece of land that has been fraught for centuries seems further away than ever for Israelis and Palestinians at this time. After the Hamas terrorist attack, the world looked on in shock. Even the Israelis themselves are in shock. Hamas' violence was so horrific that it immediately created a division: is Israel's counter-reaction justified? A situation arose in which it seemed necessary to speak out. At the same time, groups were so strongly opposed to each other that such a statement actually felt unsafe for many. Even in the Netherlands, months after the Hamas terrorist attack and Israel's sustained response, this division is still in play. In order to continue to see the historical context and place developments in a broader perspective, including in connection with international political relations, a constructive conversation is vital.

During this Freedom Lecture, we will engage in a conversation with documentary filmmaker Natascha van Weezel and journalist Radi Suudi who each tell their own personal side of a complicated history. Among other things, they will discuss how we can live well together in this world, how different groups can learn to find each other, and how space is created to be who you are and stay in dialogue with each other. Each edition will also feature a musical interlude by ud player Haytham Safia. The presentation is always in the hands of writer Oscar Kocken.

During this evening there is, of course, also room for the audience to join in and exchange ideas with the guests. Because talking with each other instead of about each other is currently the way to keep the peace and stay in dialogue with each other.
